I’m big on keeping up with guy points because if you fall below a the magic number you lose your guy card. Build a fire:+5 points, change the oil in your car:+25 points, ride a motorcycle cross country: +500 points.
But you can also lose points. Have a song by any boyband on your iPhone: -5 points, suggest that your and your buddies go to lunch at a restaurant that doesn’t serve wings:-25 points, buy a Taylor Swift CD:-100 points.
Well I broke the Taylor Swift one but I didn’t lose guy points in fact I gained points in both the guy and daddy category. Here’s how. A couple of weeks ago my wife and I went shopping for a TV to go in the bonus room of our new house, mainly for the Wii. One place we went in was Best Buy and there was big display for Taylor Swift’s new CD. Susan told me that our youngest daughter Sara had mentioned wanting the CD. The last few weeks have been tough on her with our move to Madison so I decided to surprise her. As we were walking back to the car my wife asked me if I was afraid of losing guy points because I was carrying a Taylor Swift CD. No way was I losing points, I was gaining points because I was doing something for my child, which were Daddy points. A bonus was my wife saw me putting my daughter’s feelings ahead of my own and that’s how I gained guy points.
Here’s the deal, one of the best way a guy can be a man is putting his family first. Consider what they need or want. Sometimes the simplest stuff mean the most. The CD didn’t wreck our family budget but you should have seen the look on Sara’s face, not because of the gift but because it showed her how much she meant to me. That’s being a real man.
