I suck at remembering names! I have literally forgotten a person’s name by the end of a 30 second conversation. That’s not good so I’ve decided to do something about it. Learning how to remember names is my number 1 personal improvement goal.
I’ve done a lot of research and here are the most common methods to remember a person’s name.
Decide that it’s important to you to remember people’s names. Don’t take the easy way out and blame your “bad memory”, the truth is anybody can remember names if they want to.
Repetition, Repetition, Repetition
Repeat the person’s name as many times as possible as quickly as possible without sounding like an auctioneer.
Take a Picture
Associate the person’s name with a picture that’s easy to recall.
Convert it to an Image
Simple example is when you meet Barbara convert it to barbed wire fence.
Pretty good list of hints but I’ve tried them all and I’m only marginally better. Then I discovered Ron White. No, not Tater Salad who is my favorite comedian and one of the best communicators ever, but Ron White the memory expert. Below is a presentation he did where he teaches the 5 steps to remembering names, or anything else for that matter.
