John Wooden’s 7 Point Creed

There's nothing worse than some loser trying tell me how to be successful. It's gotten to the point that I don't trust words, I trust actions. That's why when I ran across John Wooden talking about his 7 point creed, I listened.

John Wooden's dad had taught him the creed or summary of beliefs, as a teenager. From that point on Wooden used the creed to make decisions on how he was going to live his life. I think most importantly, his creed helped him stay focused when things weren't going well when he first starting coaching at UCLA. Because he didn't panic, Wooden layed the foundation that resulted in 10 National Championships, including 7 in a row! That's what you can do when you have set of basic values and beliefs.

Here's Coach Wooden's 7 Point Creed

1. Be True to Yourself

Invest the time it takes to find out 2 things: what you're good at and what you enjoy. Once you know these facts, focus on getting to be the best at them and never let anyone talk you out of them. Be confident but not cocky.

2. Make Each Day Your Masterpiece

I love what another great coach said about living every day the best you can:

“This is the begining of a new day. God has given me this day to use as I will. I can waste it or use it for good. What I do today is important because I'm exchanging a day of my life for it. When tomorrow comes, this day will be gone forever” -Coach Paul “Bear” Bryant

3. Help Others

Come on, what feels better than helping someone else?

4. Drink Deeply From Good Books, Especially the Bible

A lot of people worry about how much time guys spend playing video games, but I'm more concerned with how little time guys spend reading. Books, especially biographies of succesful dead guys, can give you such a headstart on the rest of the world, people will think you're cheating.

5. Make Friendship a Fine Art

After you graduate from high school or college, the odds are that within just a few years you'll have ONE real friend. But it doesn't have to be that way, it just takes effort. And it's worth the effort. The “how” is simple-be the kind of friend you'd like to have.

6. Build a Shelter Against a Rainy Day

Spend less than you earn! Save 10%, Give 10%, Live on 80%. Live BELOW your means.

7. Pray for Guidance & Give Thanks For Your Blessings Every Day

“You really only need three main prayers: Help, Thanks, Wow” -Anne Lamott.

John Wooden built his whole life on the foundation of that creed and it turned out pretty good. He stayed married to one woman for 59 years, had two kids who were both successful and oh yeah, won 10 national championships in 12 years. So the obvious question is if John Wooden had a creed, do you? What's your creed?
