Just Show Up

“Modern Family” is one of my favorite new sitcoms. One of the story arcs in the pilot episode was defining what it means to be a good dad. Everybody’s got all kinds of jacked up ideas, but in the end Ed Oneal (from Married with Children) character Jay says, “90% of being a dad is just showing up.”

That’s kind of a sad line but when compared with how lots of folks parent, just showing up would be a huge improvement. When you just show up, you know what your kids are going through, who their friends are, how they are doing in school, who their teachers are, and more.

When you just show up in a marriage, you know what your partner is struggling with, what the last big success they had was, what their goals are, what scares them and more.

When you just show up at work, you move ahead of most of the people you work with.  A good work ethic is pretty scarce is lots of businesses.

So maybe a success strategy that will put you ahead of the curve is just show up.
