That's the whole point of this essay. I love the book of Proverbs. It's the best book for training and teaching men ever written — penned by the wisest man alive, 4,000 years ago. It's been tested and vetted ever since so If it didn't work, you'd have heard by now.
Too many guys think the Bible doesn't apply to their world in 2026. So I'm going to prove it does by giving you one situation you'll actually face then pair it with one verse that already solved it.
Ever back the wrong guy before knowing the full story? You already read that one above. Proverbs 18:13. Learn it.
Should you keep giving advice to a guy who never takes it — even after he watches you be right, again? Don't waste your breath on fools, for they will despise the wisest advice. — Proverbs 23:9
What actually makes a man successful? Get the truth and never sell it; also get wisdom, discipline, and good judgment. — Proverbs 23:23
What does binge drinking actually look like? Who has anguish? Who has sorrow? Who is always fighting? Who is always complaining? Who has unnecessary bruises? Who has bloodshot eyes? It is the one who spends long hours in the taverns, trying out new drinks. Don't gaze at the wine, seeing how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup, how smoothly it goes down. For in the end it bites like a poisonous snake; it stings like a viper. You will see hallucinations, and you will say crazy things. You will stagger like a sailor tossed at sea, clinging to a swaying mast. And you will say, "They hit me, but I didn't feel it. I didn't even know it when they beat me up. When will I wake up so I can look for another drink?" — Proverbs 23:29-35
Translation: the hangover ain’t worth it.
Ever catch yourself bragging about plans that haven't happened yet? Don't brag about tomorrow, since you don't know what the day will bring. — Proverbs 27:1
Should you be your own hype-man, or let your work speak for itself? Let someone else praise you, not your own mouth — a stranger, not your own lips. — Proverbs 27:2
Should you tell the truth, or just tell people what they want to hear? In the end, people appreciate honest criticism far more than flattery. — Proverbs 28:23
If you had one prayer guaranteed to be answered, what would it be? O God, I beg two favors from you; let me have them before I die. First, help me never to tell a lie. Second, give me neither poverty nor riches! Give me just enough to satisfy my needs. For if I grow rich, I may deny you and say, "Who is the Lord?" And if I am too poor, I may steal and thus insult God's holy name. — Proverbs 30:7-9
Translation: don't pray for more. Pray for enough and for the guts to stay honest either way.
